Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal

Classification: Fifth Growth

Appellation: Pauillac

Bordeaux

Rating 97pts

Reg Price: $59.99

Club Pricing

$39.96

Pauillac benefitted the most out of the 2019 vintage.  Meaning even the mediocre producers’ wines taste better than usual and great producers like Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal taste superbly.  Situated on the Left Bank in Pauillac, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes achieved phenolic ripeness yet maintained healthy acidity levels.  Give a full day’s decanting or drink over several days, and you’ll find the (red) fruit ripe yet fresh, with fine tannins, sweet tobacco, savory herbs, and length to the finish. There isn’t another wine on the shelf that can match the quality, complexity, and pedigree at $39.96. Mark the price you paid for this bottle because as critics continue to re-review the 2019 vintage, especially the Pauillac and St Estephe appellations, regard and value will only increase.  Your 2019 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal will be a dark horse in your collection.

Chateau Lagrange 2018

Classification: Third Growth

Appellation: St Julien

St-Juliean, France

Rating 96pts

Reg Price: $89.99

Club Pricing

$59.96

St Julien is the smallest appellation yet boasts the highest ratio of classified growth to terrior. Chateau Lagrange is the best value for what still is an underrated wine. When Suntory purchased the estate in 1983, they poured millions into improving the vineyard and then building out a state of the art winery. The investment has paid off because the 2018 vintage and onwards has scored exceptionally high. Chateau Lagrange is populating in critics picks to taste and recommend for collectors. The 2019 vintage is a record breaker for increasing Cabernet Sauvignon to %78 of the blend followed by Merlot and signficant decrease in Petit Verdot. Why? Like Pauillac wines, the Cabernet Sauvignon achieved phenolic ripeness that for some were perfect.

The tannins are so well integrated that they enter the plushy texture. Also, herbaceous and floral notes can be found. Virginie de Valandraud has the most distinguished and bountiful flavors. Decanting the wine for half the day will be necessary if you plan to drink now. The blend consists % of 70 Merlot & %30 Cabernet Franc.

Chappellet Pritchard

Hill Estate Vineyard

Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Vallley

Rating 100pts

Reg Price: $299.99

Club Pricing

$229.96

Chappellet is special because their wines have been an important benchmark for greatness in Napa Cabernets and the ratings from critics concur.  For experienced Sommeliers, Chappellet is beloved for its unwavering direction to its true north despite winds of trends and fads.  To this day, they remain family-owned (a rarity in the era of binge buys of iconic family wineries).  We are pleased to offer their iconic Pritchard Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the classic Signature Cabernet Sauvignon.  Pritchard Hill Estate is %95 Cabernet and %5 Petit Verdot, whereas Signature mirrors a Bordeaux blend of %77 Cabernet Sauvignon, %12 Petit Verdot, %8 Malbec, & %3 Merlot. The 2016 vintage followed the preceding years of declining yield due to persistent drought. At it’s release, the vintage was lauded as very good but now, it’s proving to be Napa most exceptional vintage. Concentration of the fruit and silky tannins are wonderous. The 2018 vintage was ideal for its fairly cool and long growing season but for wine style like Chappellet, they require longer aging than their fellow brands, foe or friend. If you prefer your Cabs with “firm tannins”, let’s cheer this year to you with this wine! If you prefer plush, silky, or velvety tannins, play the long game and send an invite drink to drink in 3-5years.

Chateau Coutet

Classification: Grand Cru

Appellation: St Emilion

Bordeaux

Rating 93pts

Reg Price: $49.99

Club Pricing

$29.96

Chateau Coutet has eschewed the classic vinification to renewable methods.  The vineyard has never been exposed to herbicides/pesticides, which made going organic easy. As part of the renewable method,  the wines are vinified in traditional cement tanks, followed % by 85 of the wine aged in %20 new French oak and the rest in cement vats.  This process has resulted in a fresher style with purity in fruit, softness of tannins, bright acidity, and a clean finish. The front label visibly contains the statement, “Made with Organic Grapes.” those who love their Alexander Valley Cabernets may believe that opposites attract when it comes to Coutet’s Merlot-based St. Emilion.

Chateau La Croix de Gay

Appellation: Pomerol

Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, France

92pt Rating

Reg Price: $49.99

Club Pricing

$39.96

Chateau La Croix de Gay Pomerol 2019 didn’t fare as well with the critics compared to their prior vintages.  The 2019 vintage had a tough follow up to the exceptional 2018 vintage specific to Pomerol.  Despite critics’ lack of high praise, consumers love the 2019 vintage.  Perhaps, there’s the charm in its rustic style, which was absent in the 2018 vintage.  It’s drinking with robust notes of spice, coffee, & leather with some plum/blackberry notes and, finally, smooth tannins. Unlike the Virginie de Valandraud, it only requires a couple of hours in the decantor to enjoy. The blend consists of %97 Merlot & %3 Cabernet Franc.

Domaine Matrot Monthelie

Regional Appellation: Cote de Beaune Village

Appellation: Monthelie

Pinot Noir • Burgundy

Rating 92pts

Reg Price: $49.99

Club Pricing

$44.96

Monthelie is the smallest Village in Beaune and located next to Volnay. It also shares similar style to Volnay with its softer acidty and tannins, delicate floral notes, and black cherry fruit. It rarely develops the complexity, ageability, and structure of Volnay but it’s at least half the price. If you’ve never forayed into the Burgundy world but you love your light bodied and earthy Willamette Valley wines, Monthelie produced Pinot Noir would be a close match. The body would be light-med in comparison to current Willamette styles. It’s also more demurre with spice and earthy notes. Monthelie is one of the few village-level Burgundies that still a bargain. It’s drinking lovely now.

Duckhorn

Cabernet Sauvignon

Napa Valley

Rating 93pts

Reg Price: $79.99

Club Pricing

$74.96

Duckhorn’s Merlot may have been the lightning rod for their meteoric rise in popularity, but their Cabernet Sauvignon deserves our attention and open arms.  It’s a blend of %79 Cabernet Sauvignon, %18 Merlot, & %3 Cabernet Franc.  The latter is the game changer to this blend because, to be frank, it is to be Franc.  The %3 Cabernet Franc offers acidity, which lifts the body to create a balanced mouthfeel.  Then there’s the sweet & savory spice that broadens the flavor beyond just the fruit.  Finally, the firm tannin reinforces texture/structure.  In conclusion, if you like your Cabs to go forth boldly, then Duckhorn Napa is your friend in arms.

Figgins Family Estate

Cabernet Sauvignon Blend

Walla Walla Valley

Rating 93pts

Reg Price: $119.99

Club Pricing

$79.95

Figgins’s success is an extension of Leonetti’s legacy and status.  Leonetti was the Figgins family’s first winery and developed a following after critics lauded the Figgins family for producing the finest wines in Walla Walla.  In 2001, Chris Figgins became Leonetti’s winemaker, and from there, more success followed.  In 2008, Chris Figgins released his new wine, “Figgins Estate Red,” under his new winery, “Figgins Family.”  He received 94 points and continued to receive high scores.  What makes Figgins Estate Red unique is that production taps out 2,000 cases.  Cabernet Sauvignon dominates as the blend, and Petit Verdot and Merlot round it off.  Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington tends to develop savory herbs & sweet spices with pronounced tannins and lively acidity akin to Bordeaux.  This wine is made to match food!

Hall Kathryn Hall

Cabernet Sauvignon 2018

Napa Valley

Rating 96pts

Reg Price: $229.99

Club Pricing

$149.96

Kathryn Hall Napa Cabernet boxes at the heavy-weight level.  It’s a one-two punch to the nose and the mouth.  On the nose, the aromatics are powerfully effusive.  On the palate, a tsunami of flavors floods in.  With aging or decanting, the wine will settle and better integrate like the 2016 vintage, which is drinking magnificently. The tannins have integrated nearing to a silky texture, and the cassis and blackberries are nicely spiced with hints of vanilla and leather.  The 2017 vintage is bolder with pronounced tannins, leather/cigar, spice, and cocoa.

Oddero

Barolo DOCG

Piedmont • Italy

Rating 93pts

Reg Price: $72.99

Club Pricing

$59.96

We think of Barolos like Cabernet, bold – big tannins and full body but that’s not the complete picture. La Morra Barolos are elegant, lithe, and drinkable upon release. In difficult vintages as was the case for the 2017 the better producers like Oddero, their Barolo expressed ripened tannins, softer acidity, lighter body, and freshly riped red cherries. To complete typicity, a hint of rose petals and herbs rounded off the nose. I introduced the Barolo challenge and swapped out Pinot Noir for 2017 La Morras. Suprise this year’s holiday dinner with a 2017 Oddero Barolo, it could be the greater wine between Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir camps.

‘Enhance tradition, maintain innovation’- Michael Silacci, Opus One Winemaker.  Michael Silacci had developed a reputation as a perspicacious winemaker.  In 2001, he left Stag’s Leap and joined Opus One as the Director of Viticulture and Enology.  Silacci introduced innovations that increased concentration of fruit and extended length to the finish.  The improvements were costly at first but paying off monumentally now.  Opus One leans closer in style to First Growth Bordeaux.  Vintages like the 2010 on its release was tight and contracted but collectors who’ve decanted their bottles now are delightfully pleased at the complexity of flavors, sinewy tannins, finess, and balance.  The 2019 is similar to the 2010 except a greater concentration of fruit.

Quilceda Creek

Columbia Valley

Rating 100pts

Reg Price: $299.99

Club Pricing

$149.96

In 1979 Alex Golitzin launched Quilceda Creek in Columbia Valley, Washington, under the mentorship of Andre Tchelistcheff, known as the “Dean of American Winemakers.”  Alex’s first vintage, 1983, received the Grand Prize at the Wine Festival by Northwestern Enology.  One of the panelists at the festival happened to be the prominent and profoundly influential New York Times columnist Frank J. Prial.  He released a glowing review after the competition and what followed was another influential columnist Richard Kinssies from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, spurning wine lovers to make a pilgrimage to the winery for purchase (not available outside of the winery at that time). In 1995, Alex’s son Paul Golitzin took over as the winemaker and took their success in clinching the perfect 100-point 2002; Quilcea Creek was the first Washington winery to receive the perfect 100-point score from Wine Advocate.  Quilceda Creek boasts nineteen 100-point awarded wines spanning six different wine publications. Their wines are renowned for the purity of fruit, elegance in body, integration of tannins to silkiness, complexity in expression of graphite, earthy and savory notes, and finally, the overall balance on the mouthfeel. Their consistent excellency in every vintage has endured them with critics and consumers. We are pleased to offer verticals of 2013 100-point, 2014 100-point, 2016 99-point, and 2017 99-point.
