I know I should be using this missive to wish everyone a Happy Holiday season and a very Merry Christmas so: Have a great time all! And while you celebrate this blessed season let me offer this piece of advice, get to know a man named Jeff Carrel.
Jeff Carrel, in his young adulthood, was a Parisian Chemist, not the son of a son of a vintner. He has no romantic backstory of a child reared in vineyards, but, like me, he was bitten by the wine bug; devoured is more like it. What started as a hobby grew into a passion and then bloomed into an almost religious pursuit complete with an Oenology degree. He is obsessed with sites, soil, weather, and grape varietals. As far as his winemaking, he calls himself a craftsman who is morphing into an artist. His wines are authentic, honest, flavorful and most importantly, delightful.
Jeff has worked in Beaujolais, Alsace, and Bordeaux but his true fascination is the South of France. Corbieres, Languedoc, Fitou, Côtes du Roussillon, in other words, some of my favorite places. His office is in Narbonne and his new production facility is in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse. This puts him in the place he loves, and he loves to interpret places with wines. We are thrilled to work with his wines and will expand our selections moving forward.

Jeff Carrel Sous la Montagne Côtes du Roussillon 2016
This wine comes from mountaintop vineyards grown among the wild herbs and “garrigue” near the town of Assignan. The bulk of the blend is very old vine Carignan grown in a bush format with no trellising. It also has a healthy dose of Syrah and Grenache and is rounded out with a dollop of Lledoner Pelut. It is purplish-black and bursting with blackberry fennel aromas with a touch of menthol. Wild herbs and black fruit dominate the palate and the finish is silky and smooth as the wine is fermented and finished in stainless steel. Lamb, stew, Cassoulet, beef short ribs and strong cheeses are on the menu here. Check out this video for an aerial tour of Jeff’s Sous la Montagne vineyards.

Jeff Carrel Fitou 2016
FITOU_SOUS_LA_MONTAGNE-749a2839 From the inland, the schistous portion of the appellation, the 2016 Fitou is almost sweet and jammy in its fruity intensity, yet it retains a dry, savory, crushed-stone element that gives it tremendous grip and drinkability. It’s full-bodied but not heavy, instead offering satisfying richness without excessive weight. Wine Advocate: 91 Points

Laulerie LOL Rose Perigord 2017
JThe hilly plateau in between Bergerac & St Emilion, off the river Dordogne, offers a mosaic of inspiring flavors of the right bank expositions & geologic patterns. Young vines of Merlot & Malbec were selected to create LOL By Laulerie. These plots express their identity and their balance in grapes that unveil naturally their true potential. The grapes were night-picked at the beginning of October in order to capture finely acidulous and delectable aromas. After a few hours of pre-fermentation, cold maceration in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats occurs, followed by a direct pressing. Fermentation at a low temperature (around 61°F) preserves the fruity aspect.
