This is such an exciting time to be a wine lover. As I stated in a previous blast, we have been doing a lot of traveling and sleuthing out some great bottles from France, Spain and Italy. Old World wines have such a solid, classical make-up to them with interesting flavors and structures that lead to great pairing with food.

For those of you looking to minimize carbohydrate intake on wines, keep in mind that these three wines have minimal sugars and therefore, they are low carb wines. I watch carbs because I have type-2 diabetes. I love to cook and maintain a healthy diet, but wine is an essential part of my quality of life.

Speaking of food, with the Fall weather, these wines go great with seasonal cuisine like pot roasts, short ribs and other slow braised and slow cooked meals. The quality for price on these cannot be matched and they are just for you at Top Ten Liquors.

Domaine Piquemal Tradition Cotes-du-Roussillon 2017/2018

This is one of my favorite quaffs and it is an incredible value as well. It’s an un-oaked red blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan with a deep purple color, a nose of black fruit, anise and wild herbs. The body is rich yet smooth with more black fruits and a subtle licorice flavor. The texture is satiny smooth while the finish gentle and lengthy. It’s so good with food as a Summer grilling partner or a Winter comfort food companion. Buy this one by the case! Domaine Piquemal is managed by the 3rd generation winemaker, the very talented Marie-Pierre Piquemal, one of the more well-known winegrowers from this region. Marie-Pierre was selected winemaker of the year in 2018 by the famous French review “Le Guide Hachette”. Domaine Piquemal’s sustainable farming methods give rise to delicious and characterful wines true to their terroir.

Chateau Virecourt “Pillebourse” Bordeaux Supérieur 2016

I have said over and over, there are great values coming from Bordeaux! A classic example is this beauty from a famous Fronsac producer. Dark ruby-garnet color with enticing aromas of cassis, black cherries, tobacco leaf and dried herbs. Rich dark berries on the palate with a crisp acidity and moderate tannins. This is an elegant yet affordable right-bank wine. Merlot based wine worth double this asking price.

Cermeño Toro D.O. 2018

The Cermeño is a fruity, fresh and powerful red wine from Spain with a lot of aroma: leather, flint, spice and red fruit. The smooth taste combines perfectly with grilled meat and spicy casseroles. This full, mild red wine comes from Toro. This wine region west of Madrid is pushed up against the border of Portugal and was established in 1987 as an official DO (Denominación de Origen). The grape planted here is the Tempranillo, also called Tinta de Toro and is one of Spain’s most noble varieties. Toro wines are powerful red wines that are worth a try. This red wine is produced by the local cooperative and has the typical Toro flavor profile. It exhibits a rich and yet supple taste.
