I got to spend some quality time with my 86 year-old father this past weekend. Unfortunately, it was at the funeral of his 78 year-old little brother. My siblings and I took Dad to Duluth and helped him up and down the stairs of the church. Along with my father, other friends and relations who attended told stories from their pasts. Scars from veterans of both the battlefield and hockey rink were on display, their stories retold.  Although we were all sad to put Robert D. Abrahamson, original member of the Glen Avon Peewees to rest, there were plenty of smiles when the old warriors relived past battles and glory.

I couldn’t help thinking about all of the things my Dad has done for me over the years, selfless deeds too numerous to list. I know he won’t be around forever and tomorrow is promised to no one, so while he can still partake in a wee dram of Whisky or a glass of wine, I am going indulge him. Thankfully, in return he indulges me with new stories of old time hockey on Iron Range. There isn’t much on TV more entertaining than that. It probably deserves an R rating for violence but the stories seem to end well —at least there were no fights at the funeral.  Thanks Dad!

Stuff Dads will like:

Gordon & MacPhail Ledaig 2000 Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky
Gordon & MacPhail, a family owned firm, has been aging casks of single malt whisky from Scotland’s distilleries since 1895. They purchase what they have determined to be high quality whisky and continue to age the casks in their warehouse in Elgin. We had the opportunity to purchase an entire cask. It is simply an amazing spirit and a one of a kind since the entire contents of the cask are in our stores. While G & M’s description is accurate, I don’t believe it captures how delicious this scotch truly is. They describe it as “Smoked cured meat aromas with hints of leather and orange. The palate is sweet with fruit flavors, complimented by hints of bonfire embers.” The flavors linger on your palate for five to ten minutes of pure pleasure!
