It’s finally time to enjoy the bounty of the garden. This year my basil and tomatoes are doing well as we get just enough rain to keep everything fresh. My cucumbers are about a week away, and the herbs are plentiful. I’m thinking about a little Italian inspired spread this weekend spotlighting fresh produce and of course, Italian wines. I am very excited to share the Mocali Morelino di Scansano. It is a Sangiovese based red blend from Southwest Tuscany. Mocali, being a fine producer of Brunello di Montalcino, has created a beautiful, bargain red with Brunello-like aromatics and texture. This wine is a steal at $12.96 so get yourself a little affordable elegance with this one. For those of you who are looking for a unique sweeter wine, check out the Ferraris Malvasia. It is a fruit explosion and great with Summer fruit salads. Speaking of Summer salads, the organic Lugana from Pratello is wonderful. These vines grow with a spectacular view of Lago di Garda. Trebbiano di Lugana is the grape varietal and it will change the opinion of Trebbiano detractors.

Mocali Morellino di Scansano
“Intense purple with hints of ruby, this wine is loaded with lush black currant and black cherry layered over supple tannins and notes of tobacco and espresso. In an effort to use only traditional Tuscan varietals and no international grapes as permitted by the DOC, the required 85% Sangiovese is blended with 12% Malvasia and 3% Alicante, for extra aromaticity. The wine is aged 10 months in 350-liter barrels, of which about 30% are new. Roughly 2000 cases are produced from 14 hectares at 150 meters above sea level.” – Winemaker’s Notes
