For Summer parties and get togethers, there’s nothing like serving up a fresh batch of sangria to go with party food. It’s so easy and your guests will love it. Drinking fine wine at parties is fun too, but it might not be everyone’s jam. Sangria on the other hand, appeals to just about everyone. These days there are recipes for pink sangria, white sangria, carbonated sangria but I love just classic red sangria.

The question then becomes what wines to use for the best results. I like wines with nice acidity and moderate to softer tannins with nice berry flavors. That leads me to Grenache and Pinot Noir. You don’t have to go with one of those and that’s the beauty of it. Just avoid heavy tannins and you are good. For our recipe, we’ll offer up a fruity Grenache based red blend from Southern France, a delicious, unoaked Pinot Noir from Limoux and we’ll even select a Shiraz sans wood, from Southern Australia.

Assemble the day before the party.

2 bottles (750 ml) red wine
1 cup of brandy
1 – 1/2 cups orange juice
½ cup simple syrup
Orange slices
Sliced apples

Mix all ingredients, cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 12 hours or overnight. Serve over ice with fruit spooned in glasses.

Domaine Pontbriand Vaucluse Vin de Pays du Vaucluse

Beginning with heavily-perfumed aromas tinged with violets, the nose flows into full, round and juicy flavors with a nice savory finish. The blend is fun consisting of Grenache, Caladoc, Syrah and Marselan. Caladoc is a 1958 cross of Grenache and Malbec which tends to make full-bodied, deeply colored and robust wines. Marselan, a 1961 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec, brings good depth of color too, appealing aromas and on the palate a structure of supple tannins.

Sainte Anne de Joyuse Pinot Noir VDP

Fresh, fruity, and showing classic Pinot Noir characters, this is the perfect house Pinot Noir. Red cherry and raspberry with soft tannins, crisp acidity. Reasonably structured, rich, and full-bodied, this is another clear winner!

Sixty Clicks Shiraz Victoria

The Shiraz grapes used come from the flatter parts of the vineyard in north-west Victoria. The vineyards run from east to west ensuring they gain the maximum amount of sunlight to give the grapes all the development they need on the red sandy loam soils with clay sub-soil. Grapes are harvested by machine at night, arriving at the winery to be crushed within the hour and pressed by bag and then moved to the fermentation tanks. A really expressive, bright, contemporary Aussie red. The nose of soft, open, chocolatey fruit has a clove note with a palate of fresh brambly, cherry-red fruit that leads to a gently spicy finish.
