We have hit the sweet spot in the summer weather. I‘m still waiting for some tomatoes in the garden, and pretty soon will go from nothing at all to bushels in the next two weeks, but I am ready! Caprese Salads, salami and cheese trays on the outdoor bar and a variety of sausages on the grill and a few delicious wines in the ice bucket. I got Ella Fitzgerald sing George Gershwin right now!

About this week’s wines:

I was just talking to wine educator and importer Nikki Erplding, and she was talking about how Americans cocktail with wine where Europeans, especially Italians will choose some liqueurs or mixed drinks for cocktail hour and save wine for dinner so Italian wines are more food oriented. I agree with that with one exception and that is Lambrusco. Lambrusco is light, fruity, slightly fizzy and delicious with light snacks or by itself. The Cleto Chiarli is great for parties or just relaxing on the patio.

The Telmo Rodriguez Rueda is also a great refresher that rocks with salads and seafood while the Beaujolais is among the most utilitarian wine one can find. There are thousands of reasons to drink Beaujolais in the Summer but the most important is that it is yummy! Hope you are enjoying your Summer.

Cheers! -Bill “The Wine Guy”

Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages 2015

This is always a “Best Buy” wine but with the 2015 vintage now you have a beautiful nose of berries and flowers with a satiny smooth body still laden with black cherries. Serve slightly chilled, about 50°F with chicken salad, grilled salmon, a myriad of cheeses or grilled sausages. It’s as friendly as the people of Beaujolais!

Cleto Chiarli Grasparossa Lambrusco N/V

A semi-sweet wine of an intense red color. The wine has very fruity aromas and all the grape fragrances can be felt. Lively and fading bubbles are of a marked rose color. Its smoothness makes it surprisingly pleasant, though avoiding excesses. A captivating wine. Paired well with traditional cuisine from Emilia, it is also a wonderful accompaniment to desserts.

“Lots of rose petals and dark fruit with orange peel. Fruity and flavorful. Fine bubbles. Fresh finish. Delicious. Drink now.” 91 points -JAMES SUCKLING

Telmo Rodriguez Basa Rueda

Basa is one of the pioneering wines to show the expression of a grape variety, the “Verdejo” that adapted to a continental climate, giving rise to a direct, fresh and expressive wine.

This refreshing blend of the native varieties Verdejo and Viura from Rueda has year after year been named one of Spain’s and the word’s value white wines.
