What can I say about California that hasn’t already been said? It’s a beautiful, wonderful mess. As I said in last weeks’ missive, these are interesting times. With all the discord and cloudiness surrounding the European wine market in the United States, I find myself looking to California for a little sanity. That is a sentence I never saw coming. No matter what image of the Golden State comes to your mind, for me, it’s all about agriculture.

California grows some of the best produce in the country, and its wine grapes are certainly no exception. At Top Ten Liquors, we have more wine from California than any other region; it’s always been this way, and most likely always will be. Like many other wine-producing regions in the world, the quality, selection and availability of California wine has never been better. The wines below are terrific bottles and all under $20.

Klinker Brick Brickmason Red, Lodi

“Delta breezes and the associated fog allow us to retain above average acidity for the region, providing notes of bright cherry and raspberry. Barrel fermentation brings additional structure to this thin skin varietal. The extremely low yields of century old vineyards bring forth notes of sweet tobacco and cocoa. The result is a balanced and complex Zinfandel perfect for both Summer barbeques and Fall fire pits.” -Winemaker’s notes

Cline Cabernet Sauvignon Contra Costa/Sonoma Counties

“Grapes were handpicked at the peak of ripeness, underwent total destemming and a very gentle crush to ensure a large proportion of whole berries were left in the must. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts and maintained at the ideal temperature to aid in the extraction of flavor and color. The wine was pressed off its skins at dryness before being racked to lightly-toasted American Oak (100% new) where it gently aged for eight months.” -Charlie Tsegeletos | Winemaker

Mer Soleil Chardonnay Un-Oaked

“A light gossamer gold, the 2017 vintage opens with clean, fresh scents of kiwi, citrus zest, and nectarine. A mineral character calls to mind the rock formations found inside caves. Crisp entry leads into a striking softness and creamy texture. The flavor of lemon squares offers a perfect balance, neither too tart nor too sweet. A faint smokiness is characteristic of wines made from grapes grown in windier stretches of Monterey County. The finish features traces of lemon and lime, filling the mouth with bright notes and lingering freshness.” -Winemaker’s Notes
