If you are familiar with the Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times”, that describes my life right now. For most of my career in wine I have loved Old World wines and in the last couple of years, I have been working very hard to establish contacts in France and Spain to help bring in great wines at great prices for our customers. Instead of celebrating success, I’m caught in a trade war involving Boeing, EU subsidies to Airbus and the French taxing of major tech companies like Amazon, Google and Facebook.

You may be wondering how this affects folks in Minnesota and Wisconsin as they come to our stores to buy wine for dinner or any other purpose? Well, if the US Trade Office enacts a tariff of 100% value on all European wine (and whiskies too people) then these items will become inaccessible. Lucky for us, this week I have highlighted some great value wines that are in inventory without added tariffs. These represent terrific value, and in a sense, they represent what will be lost to all of us as consumers. That was the whole motivation to bring them in. I hope you come in and take advantage of these great buys while you can.

Cheers! -Bill “The Wine Guy”

Jeff Carrel Cotes du Roussillon DSM 2016

This wine comes from mountaintop vineyards grown among the wild herbs and “garrigue” near the town of Assignan. The bulk of the blend is very old vine Carignan grown in a bush format with no trellising. It also has a healthy dose of Syrah and Grenache and is rounded out with a dollop of Lledoner Pelut. It is purplish-black and bursting with blackberry fennel aromas with a touch of menthol. Wild herbs and black fruit dominate the palate and the finish is silky and smooth as the wine is fermented and finished in stainless steel. Lamb, stew, Cassoulet, beef short ribs and strong cheeses are on the menu here. Check out this video for an aerial tour of Jeff’s Sous la Montagne vineyards.

Chateau La Jarre Bordeaux

The nose is fruity, finely powerful and offers a fine juiciness. It reveals notes of fleshy strawberry, redcurrant and a hint of cherry associated with fine hints of cassis and toasted hints. The palate is fruity, soft, silky, well-balanced and offers a nice mineral frame, elegance, a nice fat / roundness as well as a fine acidity (fruit). On the palate this wine expresses notes of fleshy strawberry, redcurrant and fine hints of cassis and blackberry combined with a discreet hint of toasted oak and a discreet hint of caramelized hazelnut on the finish. Tannins are fine and well-built. Nice, lush and suave persistence.

Domaine Pontbriand Vaucluse VDP Red

Sumptuous, fruity and concentrated. Hard to believe this is a humble Vin de Pays! 40% Grenache, 40% Caladoc, Syrah 10%, Marselan 10%. Caladoc is a crossing of Grenache and Malbec while Marselan is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. Both varietals were created by Paul Truel in late 1950s and early 1960s in France. They both were added to the list of approved red varietals for use in the Bordeaux region as of 2019!
