No matter what you are planning for your Easter dinner we have a wine for you. Tradition would suggest there will be a lot of lamb and ham being enjoyed around town. Those are two of my favorites and I’m getting hungry already. Lamb’s wine companion is Syrah, undoubtedly! The two are made for each other and the Syrah we are recommending is a Russian River beauty from the Balletto family. You may recall us telling John Balletto’s story from previous missives but he is truly a farmer who has built up his winery from scratch, making a living growing produce until the grape bug bit in the late eighties and early nineties. For ham I like to break out a fragrant and slightly sweet Gewürztraminer, especially on an extra smoky, glazed ham. The honey and stonefruit aspect varietal works wonderfully. Then there is the ultimate utility wine that goes with almost everything. Playing shortstop, second and right field is our old friend Pinot Noir. Can’t hardly go wrong with a good Pinot Noir and the Meiomi also has a bit more body than most so your Cabernet loving brother-in-law will be happy. Ah, all is well, enjoy…

Balletto Syrah Russian River 2013
balletto-russian-river-estate-syrah__89249_1424633828_1280_1280
This deep purple and aromatic wine shows off heaps of fruit with equal measure cool-climate spicy and savory notes. Its nicely textured and incredibly juicy with bright acidity and a dark-chocolate and cherry profile that begs for the next sip. The finish is long and lasting with a coffee touch and light tannins that add grip and structure. The light oak treatment lends viscosity and that helps balance and soothe the tannins inherent in the Syrah grape.

Meiomi Pinot Noir California 2014
Meiomi Deep, rich garnet color. The wine opens up with aromas of ripe berries, fresh cranberry, candy apple and malted vanilla, some of which carries through to the palate. There’s a hint of Granny Smith apple on first sip that beautifully balances out the rich cream soda and cherry cola notes. It is an extremely layered wine, both in structure and flavor, with a slight earthiness and sweet oak on the finish. The wine almost contradicts itself, managing to display freshness and maturity all at the same time, which is achieved through careful blending.

Chateau Ste. Michelle Gewurztraminer Columbia Valley 2013

A fan favorite, this Gewürztraminer is a flavorful wine with bright, expressive fruit and clove spice. This is a lush style of Gewürztraminer with intense floral character, yet it still maintains the grape’s natural crisp acidity.
