First of all, with regards to wine ratings in magazines, I view them as a reference or an affirmation, not as dogma. I like to taste for myself first and make up my own mind. The wines this week all have scores in the Wine Advocate of 90 points or higher. I’ve tried them all and they are fantastic. Aside from the great scores, the other common denominator for this group is they are all imported by Eric Solomon.

Eric Solomon was an American rock drummer and an aspiring percussionist living in London when he was bitten by the wine bug. He quickly began travelling France and Spain to feed his newfound passion. With this experience, he soon found a job working for a major U.S. beverage company that  paid him to spend time travelling Europe’s wine regions and tasting their wares. This dream job led Solomon to the creation of his own import company. Solomon’s claim to fame is a commitment to bringing quality wines at affordable prices to our market. The producers he works with are outstanding in their regions. Jean Marc Lafage is a classic example of Eric’s focus on quality and value. The following is right out of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and it is dead on. The numbers, in this case, do not lie!

“When it comes to quality-to-price ratios, no one does it better than proprietor Jean Marc Lafage. Located just outside of Perpignan, this estate has a wealth of old vines and vineyards to pull from, and the addition of a massive new winery is only going to give them even more control. While it’s easy to write off these value-priced releases as fruit bombs, please taste the wines! They have beautiful purity of fruit, impeccable balance and each release has their own unique character. At the races, these are no-brainers.” Jeb Dunnuck, writer for The Wine Advocate

These wines will be available to sample this Saturday (7/23/16) from 1-5 p.m. at all locations.

Cheers,

-Bill the Wine Guy

Bodegas Cataño Solanera Yecla Red
BS_Castao_Solanera_NV__29172_1445899362_1280_1280
“The 2013 Solanera“Vinas Viejas” is a blend of 70% Monastrell, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15 % Grenache, aged 10 months in French and American oak. The Solanera, which comes from relatively high-altitude limestone soils at 900 meters, has a dense purple color, a big sweet kiss of blueberry and blackberry fruit mixed with crushed chalk, a full-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, density and richness. The oak is well concealed by the lavish fruit–the wine is just amazing. Drink it over the next 2-3 years, as these powerhouses are best consumed in their exuberant and extroverted youth.” 92 points Wine Advocate

Chateau Pesquie Terrasses Rouge
cq5dam_web_1280_1280 “Always a terrific value, the 2014 Ventoux Terrasses is no exception and offers complex, classic southern Rhone notes of dried garrigue, pepper, spice-box, licorice and sweet cherry fruit. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, elegant and balanced red that gains depth and richness with time in the glass, has loads Provençal character and a great finish. Made from a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah that was aged in tank and old barrels, it can last for 7-8 years (I know as I just finished a case of the ’05, which was still going strong at age 10.)” 90 points Wine Advocate

Super crisp and tank-fermented on its lees, this racy white is bursting with a stunning perfume of dried apricots, honeyed citrus and white flowers.
