I am terrible at giving gifts. Hints might be dropped, but they typically go right over my head, you can ask my fiancé. The older you get, the more difficult it seems to be to find a great gift for someone else. Especially if it’s for someone who overindulges in craft beer. In an effort to make it a little easier on you, I’ve got three beers to help you in that effort. Any craft beer nerd would be more than happy to unwrap one of these. Including myself.

And Now, the Brews

Cascade Brewing | Apricot | Barrel Aged Blonde Ale with Apricots
Cascade Apricot
Based out of Portland, Cascade has been turning out some of the country’s best sours since 2006. True sours, not kettle sours, make for great gifts for two reasons; first, they can be aged for quite some time, up to 1-2 years, and still taste great, there is no need to drink it right away. The second reason is that they typically cost a bit more money, so it will mean more than 6 pack. Honestly, any of the Cascade sours would work on this list, but Apricot is one of my favorites. Made with over 13,000 pounds of fresh apricots, the nose is pungent with apricot with a mixture of peach, vanilla, Brettanomyces, lime, honey, oak, acidity following closely behind. The palate is hit with tart apricots, lemon, tannic oak, honey, some farmy notes, and a touch of vinegar. All of this comes to a close with a great dry finish. Put it in a box, wrap it up with a nice bow, and I will gladly accept this from any one of the seven people that read this blog (hint hint).

Avery Brewing | Tweak | Bourbon Barrel-Aged Coffee Stout
Avery_tweak Everyone knows someone that drinks too much coffee, which is why Avery’s Tweak is the perfect beer to gift during the holidays! Formally known as “Meph Addict” and “Coffeestopholes”, Tweak, which is probably what happens after my 13th cup of coffee (I may be that aforementioned someone that drinks too much coffee), is a coffee stout aged in bourbon barrels for four months. This makes for a great gift, like the sour above, because it can sit for a fair amount of time. With the stout, the longer it ages, the mellower it gets. Aromas of a classic imperial stout come wafting out of the glass with added freshly ground coffee, molasses, oak, vanilla, bourbon, and good boozy note. The heat from the booze really comes through on the tongue (which will mellow out with age) followed by bourbon, oak, roasted coffee beans, leather, vanilla, toffee, and bitter dark chocolate. A collection of dark fruits gives this beer a bit of a sweet finish with some bourbon hanging on for a while. It may look like a small package, but within that 12 oz bottle lies some rich liquid that packs a punch especially when it’s drunk with a chocolaty dessert!

Goose Island | Bourbon County | Bourbon Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout
Bourbon County Hailed as being one of the first to bottle a bourbon barrel-aged stout, Goose Island’s Bourbon County has been driving crowds to liquor stores and bars for almost 20 years. It was first brewed in 1992 with only 6 barrels filled. Since then people line up outside of liquor stores on Black Friday hoping to get their hands on a bottle of this, as well as, as many of the variants that they can get their hands on. People will drive from liquor store to liquor store to get as many bottles as they can before they either run out of money or liquor stores run out of inventory. This makes for the perfect gift for any craft beer aficionado, not only because of its history hype but also because, like the other beers, it ages well and tastes downright delicious! If you can find any of the eight variants, those also make for great gifts, but those will be tough to find. A strong smell of bourbon, oak, and caramel. You’ll also find some smoke, coffee, chocolate, and notes of earthy hops. A nice balance leading into flavors of heavy bourbon and oak with a backbone of roasted coffee, burnt malts, sweet chocolate, and great earthy hop notes. While there aren’t many of these floating around the stores if you’re cunning enough you’ll be able to get your hands on a bottle or two. One for you and the other one can also be for you, you need a gift too, right?
