Happy Holidays everyone. As you are getting ready for some special meals for the season, I thought I’d put forth some red wine blend suggestions based on popular food choices, but then it occurred to me to suggest some wines that go well with a wide range of dishes. All three of these will serve you well for holiday festivities! The question is how dark and how heavy to go. I have listed them from lightest to heaviest. The Vajra is a delightful red wine from the hills of Piedmont. It’s lighter in style and can be used much like a Pinot Noir or Gamay Noir. The Siena from Ferrari Carano goes with just about anything. It is a real crowd pleaser! Finally, the Runquist 1448 explores the darker shades of red wines with nice concentration.

G. D. Vajra Langhe Rosso 2015
One of the singular best values in European table reds, this brilliant blend of Barbera, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto sing with wild berries, cherries, and deeply succulent fruit. Zesty and refined, and pairs famously with all things pasta, pork, and lamb.

Ferrari Carano Siena Red Blend Sonoma County 2013
siena_14_304x773 Siena has delicious aromas of pomegranate, cherry, plum, licorice, and mocha. Flavors of strawberry jam on the entry are enhanced by cherry cola and smoky plums that add layers of richness to this elegant wine. Supple tannins leave a balanced mouthfeel, with lively elegance, depth, and a lingering finish. I have had this wine with short ribs of beef, chicken cacciatore, pasta with a marinara sauce and meatloaf and it is always a great pairing!

Runquist 1448 Red Blend California 2015
1250902x The 2015 “1448” has a deep dark color that clings to the inside of the wine glass. The hues are bright and youthful, with an edge of magenta. The aromas lead with blue and black fruits, most notably black raspberry, along with blackberry and mulberry. The bouquet features sweet vanilla, hazelnut, violets, and lavender. The flavors are succulent and juicy, with plenty of ripe fruit framed by a toasted oak creaminess. The tannins are mature and add richness and texture to a finish that is free of drying astringency.
