Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in,” says Michael Carleone (Godfather III).

That is exactly how I felt about my experience at “Oregon Pinot Camp”.  Every year, cadres of industry folks from all over the world are chosen to participate in what’s called “Oregon Pinot Camp”.  We completely immerse ourselves in Willamette love fest.  And in the Spring of 2019, I answered to the Siren call of Oregon Pinot Camp.  Folks, I plunged, not headfirst but foot first in my Pinot Love.

I’m bringing everything I know that’s real from that experience… McMinneville Pinot Noir is a stand-out from the rest (for me).  This was confirmed on June 24th, 2019 on the final blind tasting flight of Willamette wines. McMinnville was the one AVA that I consistently called out during the blind tastings.

McMinneville’s combination of basalt soil, residual Van Duzer wind, and extreme diurnal temperature variation between day and night renders grapes with intense structure from both acidity and tannins.  The fruit profile is quite complex with tastes of both black cherries and red fruits.  The earthy note runs through the structure and fruit adding a compelling tension.

Coeur de Terre Winery is one that I have come to love.  It is located on the Coastal Range Foothills of McMinnville. The Pinot Noir embodies the best of both worlds; a Burgundian’s love for acid and tannins which create structure and an earthiness that anchors the new world’s love boat of black cherry and red fruit.  Their Pinot Gris is well balanced with lush fruit and refreshing acidity.

Scott Neal is a native Cannon Falls Minnesotan.  Lisa Neal, his wife, continues to nurture and feed new ideas and life into the winery.  Their two daughters, Abby and Tallulah, both work their charm and love for their parent’s labor of love, “Coeur de Terre”.

When you visit Willamette Valley, stop by their tasting room, taste through their wines, and don’t forget to tell Jacque (Frenchman from Jura) that Siri brought you to Coeur de Terre.

Cheers! -Siri Nyman
