“Always start with light and move to heavy,” said the seasoned hedonist.  Even for a hedonist, there are rules of engagement in how to best enjoy the fruits of life and wine.  Dust off your hedonistic robe and get ready to splash into round, smooth, and juicy grapes: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir & Petite Sirah. Take the hedonist challenge with you this weekend for the cabin, for dinner party, or for yourself.

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is often just a “style” marker that winemakers like to punctuate on their labels. A place where Pinot Gris is often the rule and not the exception is Willamette, Oregon.  Jim Bernau, founder and winemaker at Willamette Valley Vineyards, has been in business for over 30 years.  He takes great measures to continue his own education to improve his wines and practicing sustainable methods for growing, picking, and turning grapes into wine.

Willamette Valley Pinot Gris 2015
This Pinot Gris displays a beautiful balance of ripe nectarine and zingy grapefruit that even Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay drinkers can imbibe with. This has become a sleeper success for us. Our customers have commented that this was one of their favorite wines to introduce to their friends and family.

Cline Sonoma Pinot Noir 2016
cline_sc_estate_pnoir_mv_750 Cline is like family to us at Top Ten Liquors. We love their wines. It’s difficult almost near impossible to find estate grown and produced single appellation organic wines all at an awesome price. The Cline Sonoma Pinot Noir shows the classic cherry fruit with balanced acidity that Pinot Noirs are noted for. And what’s more, there is a bit of a spice box flavor that isn’t present until the finish. Whether you’re a novice in drinking Pinot Noir or self-appointed connoisseur, this wine for the price is a wowzer!

Bogle Petite Sirah 2015
bogle_petite_sirah_mv_750 Poor Petite Sirah. It hails from Herault, France, but don’t be fooled into thinking this is a misnomer after one sip. It simply suffers from the Napoleon Complex. It’s more accomplished brother, Sirah/Syrah/Shiraz, gets all the attention, but Petite Sirah/Syrah is, in fact, the bigger, bolder, and more bullish of the two grapes. The difference is such that there are fanatical fans of Petite Sirah, thanks to the fact that it’s a bigger drinking stature than even that of Cabernet Sauvignon. Petite Sirah/Syrah has fruit qualities that often shades into blueberry and blackberry. There are also earthier qualities such as black tea. For Cabernet, Zinfandel, and Shiraz/Sirah lovers, this is going into the dark side. Bogle is one of the most beloved producers of affordable and varietally correct Petite Sirah. I’d maybe have a stout chaser for this wine that’s how brutish this Petite Sirah can be.
