The year was 1999 when three cattle ranching families decided to put aside 1200 acres of their 20,000 acre holding in Santa Margarita California for grape growing. The wine business was beginning to blossom in nearby Paso Robles and the wineries need quality fruit. They were aided in the venture by a surprise investor; Robert Mondavi, who recognized the significance of the region for creating world class wines. Vines were planted and the project took shape but the Mondavi group was distracted by issues in Northern California and abandoned the Central Coast, selling their shares to the original ranchers.
Bob Rossi, Doug Filipponi and Karl Wittstrom went into the wine world head on, hiring Mike Sinor, who worked for both the Mondavi group at Byron and the Gallo folks at Edna Valley Vineyards as winemaker and they have been growing quickly ever since. Their vineyards occupy the southern-most area of the Paso Robles A.V.A. with the majority of vines growing atop ancient sea beds and other diverse soil types. The wines are outstanding. These are some of California’s greatest values and now, for the first time, they are available in Minnesota. You must come in and try the wines of Ancient Peaks for yourself. You will not be disappointed!
