It’s back to school time and buying wine, or in my case, buying more wine is the last thing on your mind. Maybe what we need is some great value wines from Italy? Lately, a few excellent vinos have been tasted and attention must be paid. Italy is loaded with great wines for less than $20, even less than $15.

The Vajra (pronounced VAY-rah) Langhe Rosso has been a favorite of mine since the mid-1990s. Year after year this blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Docetto comes through with great fruit and color while pairing well with a wide range of food. The Ioppa delivers Nebbiolo’s power without wrecking the bank account. This is one of the best values in the whole wine market! The Masciarelli is the perfect foil for pizza night or any pasta and marinara dish. Finally, as the boundaries for growing Glera grapes to make Prosecco are continually expanded to allow for cheaper, less interesting wines, the Mionetto value factor just continues to rise. This is what Prosecco is supposed to taste like and it is STILL $11.96 for rewards members

Salut!

Masciarelli Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2015
masciarelli-masciarelli-montepulciano-dabruzzo
Masciarelli is the largest organically farmed Estate in Italy. This everyday charmer is a nice marriage of old and new world styles. It has a bit of earthiness in an old world way, but plenty of fruit to please just about anyone! It has a slightly smoky and dusty nose with dark berries and leather. Cherries, blackberries, and chocolate round out the palate. This is a great “house wine” to have around for meals and friends.
