Summer weekends and holidays give perfect reasons to drink all day, but when it comes to drinking all day, there is a skill that not all have mastered. Pacing yourself and switching between hydration and intoxication. It’s a fine line that can be difficult to balance. Enter, session beers, beers below 5% ABV. There are a ton of them, which means it can be difficult to weed out the good ones. Today, I want to introduce you to some beers that your brain might not go to first when looking for some all-day drinking. Beers that are permanent residences of flavor town but will help keep you in the proper state of mind to get you home safely since you have to work tomorrow.

And Now, the Brews

Crooked Stave | Petite Sour Rose | American Wild Ale

To truly drink all day, you need variety and deliciousness. Enter Crooked Stave’s Petite Sour Rose. This wildly fermented beer was aged in Oak foeders on second-use raspberries and blueberries. This delicious concoction is then bottle conditioned using a bit more of their house yeast culture. All of this resulting in a beautiful pale red liquid with a nose of mixed berries, peach, tart sour patch kids, and citrus. The complexity of flavor is similar to the nose, in that it’s wonderfully tart with a fruit forward aftertaste of apple juice, peach, berries, citrus, and vinous grapes, mixed with a bit of malt and a touch of yeast. Coming in at only 4.5% you could easily throw this beer into the day drinking mix to add a bit of flair to the festivities.

Bad Weather | Anomaly | Passion Fruit Kettle Sour
Bad Weather Anomaly With the growth in popularity of sour beers and the inability of your average consumer to patiently wait for nature to take its course, a technique known as “kettle souring” has become a go-to way for breweries to sour beer. This technique lets brewers cut a few corners when it comes to sour beers. No longer needing to wait one or more years for the beer to sour, kettle souring only takes a few days to run its course. Kettle sours have the ability to quench the sour thirst of the thirstiest sour beer drinker. While some breweries despise kettle souring, as it’s a shortcut and can undermine naturally fermented beers’ quality and craftsmanship, most breweries have taken to the technique and ran with it. Anomaly has had many versions including mango, peach and apricot, and, now, passionfruit. Pouring a bit hazy thanks to the wheat heavy malt bill, aromas of passion fruit, wheat, and tart lemon juice leap from the glass. The taste follows closely with a hit of tart lemon juice, calmed with passion fruit and grains. With a mear 4.1% ABV, you could easily crush the entire 4 pack without blinking. Super refreshing and, despite a pH level of 3.4, super easy to drink. Drinking all Summer long won’t be an issue.
