I think it is evident that the NE style hazy IPA craze has made its way to Minnesota. With all of our fantastic local breweries putting out great versions of this beautiful, new style, I tried three beers from some of the national boys and put them up against my local favorite, Fair State’s Mirror Universe. All were delightful, but you’ll have to read through to see which one takes the cake, for me!

And Now, the Brews

Samuel Adams | New England IPA

Last Place: Not because it is Sam Adam’s, which is usually the case for me (sorry), but honestly the last beer that wowed me from Sam Adams was the Rebel Juiced IPA, which I thought was fantastic. This was good but of the group, my least favorite. The mouthfeel wasn’t anything special, a regular old beer with a nice citrus flavor. It didn’t overly impress me, but it is a fair interpretation of the style. It has a very light body, and, by the end of the brew, a lot of the flavor faded away.

Sierra Nevada | Hazy Little Thing™ IPA
ci-sierra-nevada-hazy-ipa-9dad589f37cd1dae This was tasty but, for me, it came in at 3rd out of this group. Pungent fruit flavors surround your mouth and make you salivate. This quickly turns into a malt-based heaviness and moderately bitter flavor, but still sticking to that NE Style juice bomb. This is by far the maltiest of the batch. Finishes mildly clean and bitter. The more malty profile is what put it in 3rd place for me. If you love a maltier IPA, this one delivers, plus you’ll get a taste of the Hazy IPA Craze.

New Belgium | Juicy Haze IPA
voodoo_ranger_juicy_haze_16_oz_can_ Ranked, by me, 2nd overall, and 1st of National brands. New Belgium always does a nice job representing a style and being true to what they represent. You get that bit of malt character, a nice mild bitterness, and a wonderful blast of luscious fruit. When compared to the Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams, Juicy Haze falls right in the middle. A very well balanced beer. You should definitely give this one a whirl.

Fair State | Mirror Universe | New England IPA
MirrorUniverse-200x300 This is still my favorite! This beer is jammed packed with that super juicy mouth salivating flavor that makes you want more and more. I am pretty sure that I’ve purchased at least case of this one. If you can still find any, grab it. Compared to the national boys, Mirror Universe is so much brighter. There isn’t any of that extra malt on the mid-palate, only that succulent fruit. Super refreshing and a fantastic representation of this delicious style. I really wish they would start making this guy year-round. I love it!
