Now that it is officially grilling season, my Webers are working almost daily. I’ve been doing the usual steaks, chicken, pork and burgers of various meats, but I want to start making pizzas on the grill. I know many of you have already mastered the art of pizza grilling, but I am a bit behind. I have a stone for the oven and get decent results, but it’s time to take it outside. I do know what kind of wines I like with pizza though: fruity reds served slightly chilled. The wines we feature this week perfectly pair with pizza and here is a link to a video primer for pizza on the grill. Come get some wine and get after it!

Stolpman Vineyards Carbonic Sangiovese Ballard Canyon 2014
Stolpman
“Irresistible fresh cherry and berry aroma blossom out of the glass.  Behind the beautiful primary fruit are layers of rhubarb and thin skinned, delicate Santa Rosa plums.  Serve it chilled for the most crowd pleasing ‘adult fruit punch’ experience of the wine world.” From Peter Stolpman (and I concur).

Pecchenino Dogliani Dolcetto San Luigi 2014
Pecchenino_SanLuigiDoglianiDOCG_bottleThumb “The color is a ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose it is fruit-forward with notes of currants, raspberries, blackberries and prunes. On the palate, it is well-balanced with sweet tannins and good acidity. Pairs well with appetizers, pastas, white meats, red meats and roasts.” From Winemaker’s notes.

An absolute delight to drink, this classic Lambrusco from Modena is made from Grasparossa grapes. The wine has a beautiful deep red color and terrific aromatics of plums, grapes, berries and an earthy component that is fascinating. It has the traditional bubbles and is slightly sweet but perfectly balanced. It’s great with pasta, pizza, salumi and for a delicious quaff any time!
