Courtney Benham, owner of both the Martin Ray Winery and the Angeline wine brand comes at the wine business from the perspective of a farmer and a businessman. He grew up in California’s Central Valley where agribusiness is king. I spent part of a year in Fresno California in the early eighties and witnessed the massive farming of figs, grapes, olives, berries and just about everything we find at our local grocer’s produce department. It was grapes that Mr. Benham was interested in and it has been his life’s pursuit and it would lead him out of the Central Valley and into. He created the Blackstone brand and sold it after it became a behemoth. With the capitol gained from the sale he moved on to his next creation, reviving the Martin Ray namesake, buying the old Martini and Prati winery in the heart of the Russian River A.V.A. and bringing us value conscious wine buyers the Angeline label. I don’t know how many bottles of Angeline Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir I have gone through in the last ten years but I feel I should have my own wing of Mr. Benham’s winery. These are without a doubt some of the best buys available in West Coast wines, over delivering quality for the price time and again. I think I just talked myself into bring home more of them. If you haven’t already worked these beauties into your regular wine regimen, you need to.
