This year the Familia Juan Gil (ZHOO-ahn Heel) celebrates 100 years in the wine business. They began growing grapes and making wine in the South Eastern D.O. of Jumilla (who-MEE-ah), an area with real extremes in climate. Jumilla is among the sunniest places on Earth, receiving less than 6 inches of rainfall annually. Its elevation of 2,000 to 3,000 feet allows for some significant diurnal temperature shifts, and the sandy limestone soils do a great job of holding what little rain they get. They grow the Monastrell varietal which is a proven drought resistant vine, a perfect match for the region. They also grow Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot with fine results, making these wines with excellent concentration and intensity.
The success of the Jumilla project has allowed the current Gil family to diversify into other regions of Spain in the areas of Calatayud, Rueda, Toro and Rias Baixas. Everything they produce represent a great level of value and quality, a core family commitment. The Honoro Vera line of wines are named to honor their great Grandmother Vera Gil, a very important member of this great wine family. These wines are fabulous buys which allow you to stretch your vinous budget and drink savvy! Salute!

The finish is at once rich and energetic, with solid thrust and late-arriving tannins lending shape. This wine is aged entirely in stainless steel.” Josh Raynolds Vinous Media

Honoro Vera Rueda 2014
honoroverablanco “Light yellow. Fresh citrus fruits and melon on the fruity nose and in the mouth. A floral note comes up with aeration, along with a hint of candied ginger. Finishes clean and tangy, with good clarity and length and repeating spiciness. This nervy wine would drink well by itself or with light seafood and vegetable dishes.” Score: 88, Josh Raynolds Vinous Media
