It’s time for comfort foods once again. Stews, pot roast, the iconic “hot dishes”, and lots of other oven-baked favorites are back in line. It is thoughts such as these that make me dread the coming Winter a little less. That and hockey. All of the cuisine mentioned above will require wine. I’ve put together a few recommendations that are interesting, delicious and perfect for a comfort food feast. We are tapping into wines from Italy, Spain, and France this week, and next week we will look at some great wines from the U.S. Northwest.

Masseria Primitivo di Manduria
Harmonious and medium-bodied, red wine features a creamy palate of pureed black raspberry and boysenberry fruit, accented by garrigue (wild herb) and cocoa powder notes. Finely detailed tannins add density and definition, but this remains graceful and inviting throughout, with a long, minerally finish.

Alvarez de Toledo Mencia
bot_vin The wine has a marked fruity character which brings out all the qualities and characteristics of the Mencia variety. Its time in the barrel accentuates these qualities by providing subtlety, elegance, and complexity. In the mouth, it is silky and fruity, with persistence and softness.

Chateau Lafleur de Haute-Serre Cahors
wfr070705-ch-lafleur-de-haute-s-m1 Beautiful ruby red color supported by a flowery nose. In the mouth, the attack is straightforward on silky tannins. The concentration of flavors is gooseberry marmalade. Beautiful structure and elegance. This wine is nicely feminine but with a nice kick.
