First off, happy National Donut Day! One of my personal favorite holidays. And me, a person who thinks too longingly about beer and how it can be even more intertwined with my life, wants to do nothing more than drink beer and eat donuts all day today. Celebrate in true fashion. Now, pairing beers with food can be tough, especially when it comes to sweets. The large array of different beers is no match for the endless combinations of donuts out in the world. Do you go old school or new? Savory or sweet? Filled or not? Tough questions.

Don’t worry my beer lovin’ friends. I can help you out in more ways than one. First, I know of a few pairings that may tickle your fancy, which, to be honest, is why you’re sitting there reading. Secondly, tonight at both the Blaine and Woodbury stores there is a FREE donut and beer pairing event! If any of these beer and donut combos below has your cravings running wild, you’ll be able to wrangle them in at the tastings tonight as you will be able to try those specific pairings! #WinWinWinWinWin! Now, go conquer National Donut Day like a beer drinking boss, and maybe I’ll see you in that donut induced food coma!

And Now, the Brews

Lagunitas | Sumpin’ Easy | Peach Filled w/ Toasted Coconut
Sumpin_Easy_12oz
On its own, this is a fantastic beer for the Summer months. Aromas dance up and out of the glass with hints of peach, pear, and apricot mingling with a touch of wheat, citrus, and grassy hops. On the palette, grains and citrus flavors of orange and lemon lead the show accompanied by crisp lemongrass and a touch of peach and hops. It finishes with a bit of fruity sourness and nice carbonation. A super easy drinking and delicious beer. Now pair this with a peach filled donut with toasted coconut, you done gone straight to heavenly bliss. The peach in the donut helps the peach and apricot in the beer shine, while the sweet and toasted qualities of the coconut play well off the grains while helping smooth out the sour and carbonation. This combo is fantastic, and YOU can try it for yourself at tonight’s Blaine beer & donut tasting!

56 Brewing | ‘ssippi Squeeze | Lemon Donut
56 Ssippi Squeeze Dropping in with NE Style IPA, ‘ssippi Squeeze doesn’t only make you question the pronunciation of ‘ssippi’, (I keep trying to add another “ssi” at the beginning) but it also makes you want Hazy IPAs to continue on into forever! A perfect example of how NE IPAs, from a Midwesterner’s standpoint, should taste. Fragrant pineapple, passionfruit, and mango followed by some hoppy grapefruit peel and, an ever so slight, pine. The flavors fall right on point with the tropical fruits being balanced by a slight bitterness and mild malted backbone. Fresh is best when it comes to NE Style IPAs and that’s no different here. For the donut, lemon is ideal. The lemon really accentuates the tropical fruits and hop characteristics and the sweetness of the donut helps mellow out the sweetness of those fruits. Hans Bakery in Blaine really knocked this pairing out of the park! Try it for yourself at Blaine tonight!

Able Brewing | Chrono Series 003 | Strawberry Rhubarb Donut
Able Chrono 003 Fresh from the brewery, Chrono 003 is a strawberry kettle sour brewed with El Dorado hops. El Dorado is a pretty cool hop, in that pineapple is one of the main characteristics that come from that beauty of a vegetable. A fantastic smell of tart strawberries, a touch of pineapple, and a bit of funk combine to create a much-needed cologne. There isn’t an overpowering, over-sweet flavor of strawberry, like with some strawberry beers, but it’s definitely there. The beer is nicely balanced with the El Dorado hops bringing forth those pineapple characteristics, a touch of bitterness, and a mild tartness all blending nicely with the strawberries. Now, add in the strawberry rhubarb donut, and you can kick up those strawberry notes about 10 notches! The slight tartness of the rhubarb plays well on that of the beer, and the kick of pineapple help round out this pairing! I need a mattress made of donuts, bed sheets of rhubarb, and a comforter of strawberries. I’ll sleep in that bed until it rots. I’m into it. Give this pairing a try at either the Blaine or Woodbury tasting. Yeah, it’s gonna be at both! You’re welcome!
