Tri Pics for Bills picks

Happy Fourth of July to you all! I hope you all have a spectacular and safe holiday. One of the best things about my job is getting to meet many families in the wine business. Growing grapes is farming no matter how you look at it and these folks are farming families. Brian Talley and his family have been growing produce in Arroyo Grande, in California’s Central Coast region since 1948. They added grapes in the form of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1986 and the resulting wines have put them in California’s elite among wineries. Jim Pedroncelli was born on the family farm in Sonoma’s Dry Creek AVA over 80 years ago. The Pedroncellis started with plums and apples but went to grape growing and wine production after the repeal of prohibition in 1933! Farm life has been good to Jim who could pass for a much younger man. Finally, there is the Bilbro family. Christopher started the winery in the early 1980s, raising the business from the ground up while also raising four children, all of whom are in the wine/farming craft.

We’ll be sampling these wines and other beverages at our stores this week. Hope to see you at one of them.

Talley Vineyards Chardonnay Arroyo Grande 2013
Pale straw in color, this vintage of Talley Vineyards Estate Chardonnay has aromas of grilled nuts, honeysuckle, and lemon oil. Citrus notes of lemon curd and lime zest characterize this refreshing medium bodied chardonnay. The wine finishes clean with hints of minerality and crushed stone. Enjoy this wine with fresh swordfish or sautéed sea scallops.

Pedroncelli Merlot Dry Creek 2012
This pretty wine has a bouquet of blackberry, red plum and hints of vanilla. Bright red fruit flavors are showcased along with black pepper notes and, in the background, some sage and toasty oak. Medium bodied with ripe tannins follow through to a lush, almost velvety finish.

Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red Lot 61 California
Lot 61 showcases bright perfumed strawberry and pomegranate fruit aromas. A rich spiciness combines with darker berried fruit on the mouth, which is completed by full, round structure. This is a lively, exuberant yet solidly built wine that will hold up to almost any occasion or food.
