Big Expectations

The kids are back in school, my tomato plants are toast and here we are on the cusp of another big season with high hopes and big expectations. Gameday is taking on a bit more gravity so I better up my game. Let’s talk wine. I have some winners this week.

The Intrinsic Red Blend is a game changer. It has an incredible long maceration time of six months. Winemaker Juan Muñoz-Oca started the Intrinsic program as an experiment that has turned out to be a smashing success. The wines have gobs of fruit, tons of structure, and plenty of appeal to those who like their wine on the bolder side.

My wife and I ran into the Elk Cove Pinot Blanc on a June trip to the Willamette Valley. We were winding our way south through the metropolis of Gaston, Oregon and decided, rather last minute, to hit the Elk Cove tasting room. All the wines were great, and the winery site is gorgeous, but the Pinot Blanc was an epiphany. So fresh, crisp, and fruity that we could not stop ourselves from buying six bottles and drinking it every night of our trip.

The Decoy project from Duckhorn continues to grow and the wines are delicious. All the years of knowledge and experience gained from Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon production are put to work on the Sonoma wine. It’s a style that is accessible on release, so pop a cork and set it free!
